Socialist Hasan Piker to Speak at UT Austin
Hasan Piker, a socialist Twitch streamer who is more commonly known as “Cenk Uygur’s Nephew”, is speaking at a University of Texas at Austin event hosted by the University Democrats.
Adit Raha, the president of the University Democrats, told the Statesman that the “vast majority” among the students are “very supportive” of the event.
“A few online trolls who thrive off of hate do not represent the views of the thousands of students at UT who believe that the status quo of American and Texas politics is simply not good enough,” Raha said.
Piker is well known for several controversies:
In 2019 Piker said “America deserved 9/11” which he later said was inappropriate. He received a one-week ban from Twitch.
In another Twitch stream, Piker said that “the streets should soak in their red capitalist blood” when referring to landlords. Piker would later say he was being hyperbolic.
In 2025, Piker said that if Republicans really cared about Medicare fraud they “would kill Rick Scott.” He also claimed he was just being hyperbolic.
Recently, Piker went viral when many suspected he used a shock collar during a livestream to force his dog to bed. Piker said it was just a vibration collar.
The Austin Young Republicans and conservative commentator PraxBen have challenged Piker to a debate:
