E-Verify to Pass Again?
In 2014, we celebrated as Governor Rick Perry mandated E-verify.
However, it was immediately revealed to be a scam.
Then Greg Abbott stepped in and fixed it.
I’m kidding, it was still a scam.
10 years and 10 million illegal aliens later— and it appears that something might actually happen. After all, it technically can’t be the most conservative session ever unless you re-pass all previous conservative legislation again.
SB 324, which passed out of a Senate committee last week, appears to actually mandate E-Verify for ALL employers starting in 2027, but many people are saying they fear it’s another “honor system” law.
Strangely, the fiscal report claims the program won’t cost anything.
For years, special interest groups have lied about E-Verify mandates, saying the program would cost small businesses billions of dollars. But now the State is saying they can administer it for free?
No specific agency is tasked with enforcement.
There is also a curious loophole available in the section on government contractors.
Ah, yes. The don’t ask, don’t tell loophole
So is this bill real or a scam?
Just like with Abbott and the curious case of the track meet stabbing, we are all waiting to see the evidence play out before we make a definitive statement.
It’s very possible we will be writing this same article in 2 years when they mandate E-Verify again.
Republicans in other states are much dumber, as they just pass everything the voters want at once rather than choosing to ration voter’s priorities over the course of 13 years, like with E-Verify in Texas. By passing everything at once, politicians fail to maximize how much they personally benefit from public office. It’s literally leaving money on the table.
Take Alabama for example.
14 years ago, Alabama passed a single anti-illegal immigration law that included all of the following:
All businesses must use e-verify
Proof of citizenship required to register to vote
Allows police to determine legal status during any stop with reasonable suspicion
Illegal aliens banned from receiving any public benefits at either the state or local level
Bans illegal aliens from attending publicly owned colleges (blocked by female judge)
K-12 schools required to report annually the # of suspected illegal aliens enrolled
Criminalizes transporting or harboring of illegal aliens (blocked by female judge)
Criminalizes renting property to illegal aliens
Makes it illegal for a business to fire an American worker when an illegal alien is employed (blocked by female judge)
Bans illegal aliens from applying for work (blocked by female judge)
All contracts with known illegal aliens are null and void
SB 324 puts Texas squarely on the path to be 1/10th as conservative as Alabama on immigration. It’s certainly worth celebrating.
I can honestly say I haven’t been this excited for Republicans to pass E-Verify since I was the last time they passed it, 10 years ago.
