A remarkable scene unfolded at the Texas Capitol as Democrats suddenly morphed into staunch libertarians, passionately defending people’s fundamental right to use government benefits to pay for sodas loaded with high-fructose corn syrup and red 40.
Long-overdue reform to the “supplemental nutrition” food stamps program is on its way to Governor Greg Abbott’s desk for signature, despite online political influencers being paid to resist it.
On Saturday, Senator (and candidate for Texas Attorney General) Mayes Middleton announced that SB 379 had passed and, after Gov. Abbott signs it, will be implemented by US Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins.
The bill prohibits “sweetened drinks and candy” for purchase under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Nebraska, Indiana, and Iowa have recently enacted similar bans, with additional states expected to follow suit soon.
Earlier this year, Congressman Keith Self introduced a similar bill called the FIZZ-NO Act, aiming to stop taxpayer-funded soda purchases through the SNAP program.
Several right-wing influencers on X were previously found to have promoted pro-soda messaging without disclosing that they had received payment for those endorsements.
The problem of undisclosed paid promoters throughout the social media scam-o-sphere continues to spread, with numerous popular accounts recently exposed as accepting payments to push specific political messages.
Libs of Tiktok was exposed as allegedly taking cash for posts.
More recently, Chole Cole, a detrans activist woman, recently posted a screenshot of a messaged she received being offered cash for posting.
