AI Catfishing Scam Targeting Texas Boomers!
People are falling for an AI generated quilt scam from South Asia.
While politicians in Austin prioritize regulating AI to make political cartoons, foreign actors from South Asia have weaponized AI to scam elderly people on Facebook, a company that maintains a large taxpayer-subsidized presence in Texas.
In a story first covered by Swig, the COO and founder of Old Row, a network of Facebook groups was discovered where South Asia based scammers are selling AI generated quilts to unsuspecting baby boomers and GenXers.
In the post above, specifically targeting Texans, a woman (and moderator of a Texas themed Facebook group) by the name of DIPIKA DAS, is holding a Texas style quilt stating it was made by her autistic son and encouraging people to buy from a suspicious website.
You can see that the same scam is posted multiple times with different states using similar wording and sometimes the same woman.

Swig notes that you can simply type the following phrase into your search bar on Facebook and get infinite results across Facebook of the same scam. Often times these posts are made in pro-Texas or similar groups.:
"my son is autistic he is a graphic designer"
The profile page of the authors often show a White woman despite having a South Asian name.
When pulling up the admin list of one of the scam groups “I grew up in Texas” it’s almost exclusively lists South Asian names:
The company used to place orders for quilts is TrentyItemsHub.shop and OurNewDesign.com.
The home page for the websites proudly display their AI based quilts featuring multiple states.
Recently, Texans have received scams via text claiming unpaid tolls, fake job offers, and catfishing, now they have to worry about scam AI quilts on Facebook.
The Texas legislature seems more concerned with banning AI memes and goofy political ads rather than protect Texans from these sort of scams.
TEC Confirms Phelan to Ban Memes
Many people are saying they saw it coming when it was revealed during a House committee meeting on Wednesday that Dade Phelan was lying about his bill to regulate free speech on the internet under the guise of protecting voters from being manipulated by AI.
Many people are saying this contrast shows the disconnect between powerful Austin cliques and the problems everyday people are dealing with.
