The ridiculously short workday of the Texas House got really weird on Tuesday. As if having only 48 minutes of session that day wasn’t odd enough, Austin Democrat Rep. Donna Howard somehow got to do the invocation. Something was “invoked” surely, but we doubt it was anything holy.
Overall, the prayer was mostly New Age word salad. With our state’s aura, you’d think “Don’t California my Texas” includes the opening prayers! Ironically, she introduced the prayer by praising America’s “freedom of and from religion”, and the invocation was to respect all Texans, with or without religion. However, most people were left head-scratching as to what the prayer was supposed to be about.
Before kicking off the most gibberish prayer in TXLege history, she stated the following:
“We seek guidance for the day before us from the God of our understanding, from that moral compass that calls us to recognize our interconnectedness and our collective work, and to bring to that work the better angels of ourselves on behalf of all Texans”
From this, we can’t tell if she’s into that whole “the universe giving us happy thoughts maaaaaannnnnn” mysticism, or if this is about worshiping one’s self.
“Spirit of life, God of many names, be in our hearts and minds as we come together today.”
It is incorrect to presume all faiths worship the same God. We highly doubt Jesus Christ is the same as Vishnu, or Allah is Quetzalcoatl, or Buddha is Odin, but I digress.
Here’s the rest of the transcript.
“Let us know that each from our own tradition comes today to lift our spirit in unity. We pray that we acknowledge our differences as we seek out our common ground, each of us working toward the good of all.”
I highly doubt those who ignore the plight of thousands of Texans struggling to keep a roof over their heads due to property tax, or who rooted on insurrections in Texas House are “working toward the good of all.”
“Every discussion, every decision about the use of our institutional resources or power is a reflection of what we value.”
Our recognition of the inherent worth and dignity of every person and of the call to promote justice, equity, and compassion in human relations compels us to honor our common humanity, our shared responsibility, and our commitment to all who are part of the one. May it be so and amen.
Just in case you still doubted, this was about promoting communism under the guise of us “being part of the one.” Basically, a less melodic version of John Lennon’s “Imagine.” With Pantheism and Neomarxism being preached in the Texas House here.
Besides, the idea that all are naturally part of some “one” is nonsense. For example, do you really think some Mexican witchdoctors who sacrifice birds in front of schools are “one” with a normal person in Texas?
Hopefully, prayers like this become a thing of the past as session drags on.
