City Flakes on Sharia Law Ban After Promising Action
City of Keller opts for passive aggressive “constitutional governance affirmation.”
The city of Keller made headlines after Mayor Armin Mizani issued a proclamation declaring that sharia law would not be permitted in the city, signaling that further official action was forthcoming.
However, the resolution the council passed looked very different. It was unanimous, with one council member observing that everyone present, including those who spoke in public comments, was in agreement with the resolution’s language.
It was truly a Lucy with the football moment for conservatives, and Democrats are claiming victory.
Let’s compare the two, shall we?
Mayor’s Proclamation:
WHEREAS, sharia law, sharia courts, and any other foreign or religious-based legal systems are not recognized, authorized, or permitted to operate as civil or judicial authority within the City of Keller, and shall have no standing in municipal governance, adjudication, or public policy;
Resolution Text (link):
“A Resolution Affirming Constitutional Governance…”
“The City reaffirms that it is governed by the Constitution…”
The bulk of the resolution mirrors the basic city charter language used by cities everywhere.
It has this:
“No foreign, religious, or alternative legal system” …“shall be recognized or enforced by the City”
If you squint real hard at that section, you could take it to mean that the police won’t be enforcing Sharia law.
I do not think that has been anyone’s concern, actually. But thanks, I guess?
Here’s where the resolution gets extra conservative:
Nothing in this resolution shall be construed to restrict the voluntary practice of religion, private religious counseling, or mutually agreed-upon non-binding mediation…
It actually creates a nice little carve out for sharia law.
To be fair, it is perhaps better described as a “tip of the cap” to sharia law, as long as it is “voluntary” and a private religious matter.
Feeling conservative yet?
A local Democrat voter was interviewed by Context Corner after the meeting. He had this to say about the resolution:
“They changed the language, which is a victory.”
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram wrote about the resolution switcharoo. This is who wrote the story.
This is a microcosm of Texas politics. Conservative politicians scored headlines and vague political points, then backed down at the last second. Democrats got the victory where it mattered.
Understand that any politician or grifter talking to you about banning Sharia law is taking advantage of you. (There’s a big new grifter in Texas doing this, which you might have seen.) The truth is, there is no way to ban Islam, sharia law, or any other ideas or concepts in America.(the one curious exception being antisemitism, which is illegal in Texas, LOL)
The country was not founded or intend to be in any way Islamic. For this reason, Arabs were not allowed to become US citizens until the 1950’s. There is no way to ban religious ideas in America. It was always theoretically possible for America to become a Muslim country, but it was not actually possible without mass immigration. Strictly controlling immigration and controlling who is in the country is actually very simple. Controlling the ideas of the people in the country and selectively banning ideas is insane. Republicans promising you this will lead to the same result 100% of the time.
Politicians need to stop this, because it is very clearly a scam. Do not applaud when politicians make these promises. It will not work, and all it does is benefit the politician making these promises and give Democrats a larger victory. Meanwhile, the clock is ticking and the window to Make America Great Again is closing.
Starting today, take note this election cycle of who is making these promises, and remember the lesson from Charlie Brown.
