Welcome to “Many People Are Saying,” our once a week paid-subscriber article where we feature rumors we’re hearing, inside gossip in the political world, and projects and pieces we’re working on that we haven’t published yet.

This week:

  • Whataburger is sponsoring a Democrat candidate?!

  • Dallas GOP to pass a resolution condemning two prominent Republican politicians?

  • A elected official struggles to decide what generation Texan she is.

A very quick editorial note: We published an article this week that we’ve made a correction on. We relied on data from Transparency USA and they ended up sending an email stating their data was incorrect. Anyway, we aren’t using Transparency USA anymore and you can read the full correction here. We regret the misunderstanding.

Whataburger is Paying a Democrat Candidate for Sponsored Posts

Democrat candidate, Averie Bishop, is running for office and also getting some checks from Whataburger.

Averie Bishop is a Democrat currently running for State Representative in the Democratic primary, ultimately hoping to unseat Republican incumbent Angie Chen Button in House District 112.

Averie, who seems to be a social media influencer, boasts over 800,000 followers on TikTok.

Bishop also does sponsored posts for much beloved Texan burger joint, Whataburger.

TikTok: a “#sponsored” tag indicates a paid post.

While obviously not illegal, we do think it’s odd for a candidate to simultaneously promote their political campaign and hamburgers from a chain restaurant.

Is this the future of e-girl political campaigning?

In an email sent out yesterday, Dallas GOP Chair Jennifer Stoddard Hajdu, sent an email asking for signatures on a resolution condemning Morgan Meyer and Angie Chen Button.
