House Speaker Dustin Burrows Ain’t so Bad?
Texas GOP Chair Backing Sid Miller's Opponent!
Believe it or not, people are already making announcements for the 2026 GOP primaries. One such candidate is Nathan Sheets, a Honey CEO who’s based in McKinney and was interviewed by D Magazine in 2022. He recently announced his run against Sid Miller for Texas Agriculture Commissioner, and already has several notable speakers at his kickoff event, including ex-Senator Rick Santorum, and Texas GOP Chairman Abraham George.
If a documentary gets made about this campaign, it’d be called “The Bee Movie.”
To the surprise of some, Sheets had what some describe as a “pretty decent turnout,” despite lacking name recognition outside the DFW metroplex.
Not much is known about Sheets politically. However, it’s known he donated $15,000 to Sid Miller in the 2024 election cycle.
Going from the 2015 election cycle to the present, he donated to a whole host of Collin County-based candidates, including Reps. Matt Shaheen, Jeff Leach, and even Candy Noble, whom Abraham George ran against in 2024.
What’s interesting is the fact Texas GOP Chairman and ex-Collin GOP Chairman Abraham George allegedly stumping for him. This may be motivated by the fact Miller stumped for one of his opponents, Weston Martinez, at the Texas GOP Convention in 2024.
Regardless of motive, these events have snowballed into more speculation regarding potential Ag. Commissioner candidates. In light of our coverage, former GOP Vice Chair Cat Parks implied a desire to jump in the race.
Overall, with a long ways to go till filing deadlines, there’s plenty of room for more candidates in this race. With the glorified circus called “Texas primary season,” expect more theatrics of all factions.
Jared Patterson…or Ben Bumgarner Has a Primary Challenger
Highly respected journalist of The Texan, Brad Johnson, reported today that Larry Brock Jr. had filed an appointment of treasurer in HD 106, currently held by Representative Jared Patterson.
Many people noticed that the mailing address for Brock is not located in HD 106. It’s actually located in HD 63 held by Representative Ben Bumgarner.
Brock told Current Revolt that he had filed a Campaign Treasurer Appointment to begin organizing his campaign. He also stated he plans to move into Texas House District 106 before the end of May 2025.
Opponents noticed that Brock voted for the Democratic candidate in 2020.
Brock explained that when he voted in the 2020 Democratic primary, he hadn’t considered running for office. He states he strategically voted for Bernie Sanders, whom he considered a weaker general-election candidate than Joe Biden, to boost Donald Trump’s chances.
Frisco Police Officer Association Disavows Councilmember
The Frisco Police Officers Association put out an open letter late last night addressing the remarks made by Frisco Councilmember Tammy Meinershagen.
Frisco Chronicles posted the recordings of Meinershagen on their YouTube page across 8 different videos. You can find those recordings here.
House Speaker Dustin Burrows Ain’t so Bad?
Michael Quinn Sullivan of Texas Scorecard posted on X yesterday that Dustin Burrows had actually been quite effective in advancing conservative policies!
This is a wild turn of events and change in rhetoric considering the majority of this session the grassroots has been attacking Speaker Burrows and accusing him of being liberal. Even Texas Scorecard staff has been consistently attacking Speaker Burrows daily:
The grassroots hasn’t been very receptive of this messaging by Sullivan with some accusing him of being bought out.
Current Revolt had reported very early on that Dustin Burrows was a more conservative choice than David Cook for House Speaker.
It remains to be seen if the grassroots will accept this updated messaging concerning Burrows.
I went to Sheets' kickoff, and it was a surprisingly good turnout (your photo did not show the large crowd standing behind the white chairs). But that being said, I went curious to see what he had to say, but left very impressed. I love his message - making sure Texas produce is healthy for future generations (think RFK Jr with a baseball cap). He has an Ag Background, he is uber conservative, and hey, he's from Collin County. I think he'll do well.
