It’s been a big year in the Texas Legislature. School choice finally crossed the finish line—too bad many people lost interest, rolled over, and fell asleep after they won the race.
Those still paying attention know that, overall, it’s the most conservative session we’ve seen in years. Possibly ever.
The secret to delivering the “most conservative session ever” is simple: recycle your old conservative bills and pass them again. That’s what this story is about—and honestly, it’s exhausting.
Texas would further cement its role in enforcing immigration laws under a bill the state Legislature sent to the governor Sunday that would require most sheriffs to cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Gov. Greg Abbott has signaled support for such an idea, and President Donald Trump — whose administration could receive a big personnel boost for its mass deportation ambitions if Texas joins the effort — endorsed the proposed law Friday as state lawmakers worked on the latest compromise.
The version of Senate Bill 8 that lawmakers ultimately voted to send to the governor would require sheriffs who run or contract out operations of a jail to request and enter agreements with ICE under a federal law that lets ICE extend limited immigration authority to local law enforcement officers. The bill would cover approximately 234 of the state’s 254 counties, according to a bill author.
Most of you probably didn’t even read that because you know it’s all fake.
Most people only last a few years following Texas politics before realizing it’s all fake, gay, and completely exhausting, and they move on to something else.
These politicians ran the exact same play 8 years ago when they passed SB4, which allegedly banned sanctuary cities.
It was quickly revealed to be a hoax.
I guess this new one is different and better? If that’s true, why didn’t they just pass this one 8 years ago?
It was allegedly a tough and scary law at the time, and came with jail time and removal from office for Sheriffs or DA’s who weren’t turning over illegal aliens to ICE.
Then a police officer was murdered in 2020 by an illegal alien after the DA’s office instructed officers to let him go just days earlier. Nothing happened, nobody got in trouble, nobody got removed from office, just another dead Texan.
There’s no reason to think anyone will face any consequences for breaking this law.
I hope I’m wrong—then again, I also hoped Brian Harrison wouldn’t push to legalize gay sex, yet here we are.
What would Texas be like if they actually passed a useful law?
Someone else pointed it out first, but growing up in the 90s and experiencing the surge in popularity that pro-wrestling had back then has really done a lot for people following TX politics. Knowing what kayfabe is, for instance-- priceless.
